If you are looking to fund an artistic project, here is an interesting new way to do it: online with Kickstarter. You can put up details of your project, offer people incentives (like free CDs) to make a donation, and so on. There's little risk to sponsors, as you have to achieve 100% of your funding target before they are obliged to pay up. Kickstarter take 5% commission, but equally their platform makes it easier for you to explore the world of private donations, in addition to applying for grants from institutions and funding bodies.
You can see how harpist Keziah Thomas is using Kickstarter to help fund a commission for a new work by Andy Scott, for her Carnegie Hall debut, here!

It is worth saying that the 5% commission is only payable if your funding target is reached.
